Viewfinder emphasizes the importance of image-making in architectural design, challenging the conventional hierarchy by prioritizing representation as the origin of architectural space. It explores how materiality, atmosphere, and architectural character construct social experiences, focusing on the affective impact of spatial qualities like texture, color, and light.
The project selects a single interior photograph of the Yale Health Center's central atrium, unveiling a perspective toward the zenith of the space and exposing its interconnected departments through a bridged connection and a glazed opening. Through analysis and reinterpretation, the work hones in on the intricate details of apertures, geometry, spatial depth, and lighting to generate diverse spatial possibilities that resonate distinctly from the original photograph.
